ProPopulus organises the conference Treeconomics. Wood in a sustainable economy

On 22nd June, 2022, the Treeconomics Wood in a sustainable economy conference will be held in the Espacio CÓMO in Madrid (C/ Pradillo 60). This event is organized by ProPopulus and sponsored by ING and aims at giving visibility to the contribution of wood in the development of a sustainable bioeconomy and in the mitigation of climate change.

The conference will bring together experts and diverse players from the industry who will discuss the contribution of the forestry sector and the wood industry within the construction of a circular bioeconomy from different points of view. Joris van Acker, Chairman of ProPopulus and Professor and Director of the Wood Technology Laboratory at the University of Ghent, Carlos García Peredo, Head of Structured Finance, ING Spain & Portugal, and Elsa Enriquez Alcalde, Deputy General, Director of Forest Policy and Fight Against Desertification, Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic ChallengeProfessor Van Acker will also speak at the conference on “Poplar, the tree of the 21st century”.

The programme will feature speeches by Ana Belén Noriega, Secretary General of PEFC Spain, who will talk about sustainable forest management as a key factor in the fight against climate change; Juan Picos, Doctor of Forestry Engineering, Professor and Researcher at the University of Vigo, will also be speaking, in this case on his vision of innovations in the wood industry; and Julen Pérez, architect and Senior Associate at Waugh Thistleton Architects Ltd.,  will present the novelties regarding the use of wood in the construction industry.

In addition to the speeches, there will be two round tables moderated by David Álvarez García, Executive Director of Ecoacsa and Carlos García Peredo, General Director of Strategic Financing of ING for Spain and Portugal.

Participants at the initial round table, entitled “Social, economic and environmental impact of forests in Spain” will be Francesc Cano, Deputy Director of Transfer at the Centre for Forestry Science and Technology of Catalonia; Inés González Doncel, Vice Dean of the Official College of Forestry Engineers and Coordinator of the Platform Juntos por los Bosques; Antolino Gallego, Professor of Applied Physics at the E.T.S. of Building Engineering at University of Granada; and Marta Corella, Forestry Engineer and Mayor of Orea.

The participants at the second round table, which will be discussing the role of trees in everyday life, will include Oscar Crespo, Head of Business Development at the Garnica Group; Beltrán F. García, Director of R&D&Tech at Hannun; María Lafuente, sustainable fashion designer and multidisciplinary artist; and Santiago Saura, Councillor of ​​Internationalization and Cooperation of the Madrid City Council.

Pedro Garnica, Former Chairman of ProPopulus and Chairman of the Garnica Group, and Carlos García Peredo, General Director of Strategic Financing of ING for Spain and Portugal will conclude and officially end the conference.
