MITECO Grants Bosques y Ríos Certification for Spain’s First Poplar Plantation as a CO₂ Absorption Project

The company Bosques y Ríos has achieved the certification of the first poplar plantation in Spain as a carbon dioxide (CO₂) absorption project, meeting the standards of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO).

This certification highlights the importance of such projects in the fight against climate change and positions poplar cultivation as a natural and effective solution within the global efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

The Vega de Infanzones poplar plantation: a model of sustainability

Located in Vega de Infanzones, León, this 1.25-hectare poplar plantation has been certified for its ability to capture 47 tons of CO₂ over the next 30 years.

This achievement results from collaboration with Carbonx, a company specializing in environmental solutions, which provided the technical assistance necessary to meet the ministry’s rigorous requirements.

This pioneering project demonstrates how poplar cultivation can significantly contribute to emission reduction goals and promote a green economy.

In addition to capturing CO₂, the plantation improves water and soil quality by absorbing excess agricultural nutrients and acting as a natural filter.

Located in a riparian zone, it also plays a vital role in regulating water flows and preventing floods, enhancing the resilience of natural landscapes against extreme weather events.
